Restoring Fond Memories
Premier Lampshades understands that throughout life, there are moments that come but once. Adventures never to be repeated, loves to be forgotten, and memories that live on with fondness in reminiscence. Such was the case of a unique Buddha lamp purchased in Hong Kong many moons ago by our client called Jonathan Clarke-Wood-Sowa. This lamp had accumulated 25 years of sentiment along with a bit of water damage and dust to mark the passage of time.
It was as a last resort that Jonathan reached out to us at Premier Lampshades to inquire about our repair and restoration services as an alternative to returning to Hong Kong to find a replacement lampshade for his beloved Buddha.
Above the lamp’s base, formed by a meditating Buddha in Lotus Position (Padmasana), sat a Victorian-style metal frame, covered with a cream coloured fabric. We knew straight away that we’d need to exercise extra care with this vintage lamp, so we began by stripping off the original fabric to expose the metal frame beneath.
Using a specially formulated cleaning solvent, we were able to remove all the rust and grime that had accumulated over the past quarter-century. Once the thorough frame cleaning was complete, we bound the entire metal frame with fabric binding tape and then skin lined over the top of the frame in our white stretch lining fabric. We then employed our sage green Dupion fabric to fashion the lamp shade’s outer covering.
After the initial outer covering was in place, and to accent it perfectly, we handcrafted a sage green Dupion flat trim from the same sage green Dupion outer fabric for a flawless match. We then bonded the sage green flat trim down each stay and around the top and bottom of the lampshade to complete the restoration.
Premier Lampshades is quite proud to have been able to restore such a storied lamp and its associated memories for our valued client and are pleased to know he was “thrilled” by our services. In fact, here’s what he had to say about it:
“A couple of weeks ago I decided to replace the lampshade from a cherished lamp I brought back from Hong Kong many years ago. I am not exaggerating when I say I searched the internet for a week and could not find anything resembling the shade I had. I was on the verge of giving up or going back to Hong Kong when I came upon the Premier Lampshades web page. I filled in the online form but called ahead as I had so much trouble locating the shade. Ian was very helpful, and we decided to repair the shade I had. It was 25 years old, a little faded and had a watermark from a leak at home. You can see the before and after photographs and to say I am thrilled is an understatement. I had the shade back looking brand new within the week. Thank you so much to Ian and his team, I cannot recommend them highly enough.”
