White Fabric Lampshades

In the full spectrum of colours, where black represents the total absorption of light, white represents the total reflection of light. While it may seem that white really has no colour at all, there are in fact various tones of white.

White is a neutral colour most often associated with positivity, cleanliness, efficiency, purity, clarity, emptiness, and starkness. It reflects natural light to create a heightened sense of space, making small rooms appear much more substantial.

A favourite within minimalist design style, white is the most commonly used colour in interior design for its abilities to cool saturated warm colours, and provide an excellent backdrop for displaying vibrant artwork or accessories.

You might have noticed that the mouldings around doors, windows, and floorboards along with almost every ceiling you’ve ever encountered are white. That is because in addition to reflecting natural light, white stands out and creates an excellent barrier effect when paired with every other colour. White accent pieces and accessories work well to break up the monotony of a single colour scheme.

When paired with deep tones of green, red, blue, and black, white creates a dramatic effect in spaces that might otherwise appear to be oppressive. When paired with softer tones of almost all other colours, white accents produce a sense of lightness and tranquillity.

Even when a monochromatic design style is desired, too much white can create an unappealing sense of cold emptiness. It is the visual equivalent of deafening silence and caution must be exercised not to create a space that is merely a void.
