Repairing with Care: A Restoration Transformation

At Premier Lampshades, we understand how attached our clients become to their lamps and lampshades. Often, they have been in a family for decades and are a treasured part of the home.

Unfortunately, over time, lampshades begin to show signs of wear and tear. Silk starts to fade and rot, fabrics fade, and tears begin to appear. What happens then? Do you throw the shade away, or attempt a repair?

As a highly experienced team of lampshade craftsmen with decades of experience repairing and re-covering shades that have seen better days, we believe there’s always hope for a lampshade in distress. So we were especially pleased when Mrs Rollinson from Huddersfield got in touch earlier this year to let us know that she had a beloved lampshade that was in need of some serious TLC.

Repair with care

Mrs Rollinson sent us photographs of her family’s cherished lampshade to allow Ian, our master craftsman, to get an idea of the level of work necessary. As you can see from the picture below, the lampshade was showing signs of age.

Following a consultation, Ian established that it would be necessary to unpick the three layers of fringing on the lampshade in order to remove the silk fabric and make an accurate template.

Carrying out this type of work on an already fragile and rotten silk fabric shade requires a gentle touch and patience to avoid further damaging the fabric. However, Ian is highly experienced and managed to remove the silk without compromising the fringing or fabric.

After creating a new template, Ian reapplied the braiding and fringing. The result? A picture-perfect lampshade restored to its former glory. As you can see from the images below, our meticulous restoration methods enabled us to deliver the lampshade back to Mrs Rollinson and her family to display in all its timeless glory.

Another delighted customer

Mrs Rollinson was very pleased with the result. We would like to thank you so much for refurbishing our treasured lampshade,” she said. “We realise it wasn't an easy task unpicking three layers of fringing and sewing them all back and making a template of the rotten silk and stitching each section beautifully – but you did it.

Reapplying the old braid completed the look perfectly. It was a pleasure doing business with you.
