3 Quick Tips for Choosing the Perfect Lampshade

Are you struggling to find the perfect lampshade to complement a new or old lamp base? Perhaps you’re unsure how to choose a shade style, colour or size? At Premier Lampshades, we know that pairing the right shade with a lamp base can be tricky. That’s why we’re here to help with a few helpful hints and tips to guarantee you pick the right shade first time, every time!
Tip #1: Choose the right size
It’s important to choose the right size of lampshade to match your base. Too large and you’ll end up with a rather comical-looking (and unstable) lamp. Too small and the overall result just looks silly and slapdash.
General tips for choosing the right size shade for table and floor lamps
Height
The lampshade for a table lamp should be approximately three-quarters of the height of the base. Depending on the overall height of your lamp, floor lamps generally suit much larger shades, usually with a base diameter of 18 inches or more. Of course, if your floor lamp is much smaller or larger than average, you should adjust the height accordingly.
Width
Measure your lamp base from the bottom to the fitting. Your new table lamp lampshade’s width should be roughly equal to this measurement. Choose a shade that’s slightly wider than the actual width of the base on both sides with give a much more balanced look overall.
Tip #2: Balance large bases with large, bold shades
For a balanced and beautiful look, it’s important to try to match the proportions of both your base and shade. Large lamp bases are eye-catching and are often displayed in pride of place in our homes. To truly accentuate a bold base, try to choose a lampshade in an equally bold (but matching) style and size. For example, pairing a large colourful base with a small, neutral shade won’t work because the proportions and style combinations will be disjointed and distracting.
Tip #3: Choose the right shape and colour
For a truly seamless look, match the shape of your lampshade with the shape of the base. Square base? Try a square or octagonal shade. Curved, shapely base? Try a rounded dome or oval shade.
Struggling to decide on a colour scheme? When deciding on a colour or pattern for your lampshade, you should always take the décor of the room the lamp with be displayed in into account. If your lampshade base is wooden or quite contemporary in style, natural linen shades work well. Take care not to pair clashing patterns or colours – unless that’s part of your design scheme that is!

Choosing the right lampshade size is crucial, especially with floor lamps. If the shade's too big, it can overpower the base, and if it's too small, it’ll look awkward. Also, balancing the size of the base and shade is key – large bases need large shades to match the boldness. Anyone else struggle with finding the right shade shape to complement their lamp’s base? I always end up second-guessing the color scheme too, especially with patterned shades!
