Lampshade Repair Theatre Royal Brighton

Premier Lampshades was asked two weeks ago if  they could do a lamp shade repair project, also if they could manage such a huge restoration job to recover a number of lamp shades for the Theatre Royal Brighton. Of course we said we would love to repair the old theatre`s lampshades. Well we were in for a surprise; they must have been on the existing fixtures for at least 50 to 60 years with state they arrived to us. In 2007 the theatre celebrated its 200th anniversary with a visit from Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II who renamed a box after herself. We are told the new lamp shade repair project could be for the same box (fame at last)

The Lamp Shade Repair Process

The picture above shows how some of the lampshades looked when we first received them. You can see that the silk fabric has almost disintegrated and the lining on the inside just fell to pieces when touched. This normally occurs when a bulb with too high a wattage is used, resulting in the bulb being too hot and the fabric and lining becoming very brittle over a period of years. A classic sign of a lamp shade repair and restoration project. When we started taking off all the old fabric we found that the frames needed to be totally stripped and washed in a degreasing detergent, ready for spraying in a white enamel gloss spray paint. You can see where we have sprayed one of the frames ready to be recovered and relined on the inside. This project took a little longer than normal to complete because of the very poor state of the wire frames. Once the paint on the old frames had dried we cut out all the new panels in a lovely warm burgundy coloured dupion fabric. We then recovered and relined them with a cream stretch lining on the inside. You can see from all the images below that we finished off the lampshades in a very regal gold braid and regal gold fringe.
