Entrance Lighting Fixtures.

The entrance to your home should be warm and welcoming.  The lights here are often used for long periods; a good idea is to use energy saving bulbs, doing your bit to keep Britain green.  If you store your coats and shoes etc in this area you can use halogen spotlights, recessed into the ceiling giving the feeling of daylight, also with low ceilings you will have nothing to bump your head on if you are quite tall.  The older period properties normally pre-1930s – or a large new-build house usually has a taller ceiling that will be high enough to take something really show stopping like a crystal chandelier etc.

Hallway Lighting Fixtures.

Your hall is an important part of your home, not only is it an entrance point to most downstairs rooms, it is also the first room seen by visitors and here is where you want to make a huge impression on them.  A hanging pendant would be ideal for providing adequate light.  If your hallway is large enough a small table lamp on a side table can add extra interest. These lamps can be fitted with a dimmer switch to create moods depending on the time of day.  However you must make sure you have enough space so as not to knock it over every time someone walks past.  Highlight a picture or mirror with a picture light or directional wall lights.  If your hall is small or narrow consider using a flush ceiling light or wall lights.

Stairways Lighting Fixtures.

For safety reasons the staircase needs to be very well lit.  A bright pendant light is recommended hanging at the top of the stairs to create a shadow that adds definition to the stair risers.  This is another area where the light may be on for long periods therefore you should consider using energy saving bulbs.  For added light you can have wall lights going up the stairs, multi-directional wall lights could be a good idea highlighting the stairs below and have a photograph or picture above.

Landing Lighting Fixtures.

This is often a small area with the most foot traffic.  Recessed down lights or a flush ceiling light can maximise space.  Lights with a dimmer switch are a good idea to turn the light down to a low level at night for children or guests or a plug in night light in this area, providing low ambient lighting allowing family or friends to find their way around at night without falling over anything.  If you would like any help or advice on lighting your home please contact one of our friendly staff on 01204 414366 or 01204 412062  or visit our on line store at www.premierlampshades.co.uk   Premier Lampshades would love to hear any of your comments on this lighting fixtures blog.  Please leave any comments at the bottom of this page.
